CROCHET CLASSIC GRANNY SQUARE TOP FREE PATTERN

As summer is ending and autumn peeking through the trees, let’s make our last summer granny square top. You will need just 16 squares and don’t have to follow my color scheme. You can play around with your leftovers.

MATERIALS:

Yarn: Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 /Super Fine / 50 g (1.75 oz) / 170 m (186 yds) / 100% cotton – 145 grams

#001 white – 1 1/2 skeins,

#098 sage green – 1/4 of a skein,

#099 malachite green – 1/4 of a skein,

#015 grey – 1/4 of a skein,

#031 blue – 1/4 of a skein,

#032 baby blue – 1/4 of a skein,

#034 light turquoise – 1/4 of a skein

Crochet Hook: 3 mm

Stitches Used: ch – chain, sl st – slip stitches, sc – single crochet, dc – double crochet, picot, bobble st – bobble stitch

Size: XS-XXL, square – 11×11 cm or 4 1/2×4 1/2 in, length – 42 cm/16 1/2 in, width – 41 cm/16 1/4 in,

you can easily adjust the pattern to any size, please read more about it below

PATTERN:

Measure the fullest part of your chest, crochet a square as an example (if you use another yarn) and count how many squares you need according to your measurement, or you can adjust the square (less or more rows). I crocheted 16 squares

Round 1 (green): make a magic circle, ch-3, 2 dc into the circle, ch-2, * 3 dc into the circle, ch-2 **, repeat from * to ** twice, pull the circle, join with sl st to top of ch-3

Round 2 (blue): connect the yarn to any ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1 **, repeat from * to **twice, join with sl st to top of ch-3

Round 3 (light blue): connect the yarn to any ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1 **, repeat from * to ** twice, join with sl st to top of ch-3

Round 4 (grey): connect the yarn to any ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, (3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1) repeat once, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, (3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1) repeat once **, repeat from * to ** twice, join with sl st to top of ch-3

Round 5 (light green): connect the yarn to any ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, (3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1) repeat twice, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, (3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1) repeat twice **, repeat from * to **, join with sl st to top of ch-3

NOTE: you will need just one 6-rounds square, after that you should join the squares while you are crocheting the last 6th round

Round 6 (white): connect the yarn to any ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, (3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1) repeat three times, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in the same space, ch-1, (3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1) repeat three times **, repeat from * to **, join with sl st to top of ch-3

JOINING

I will show you how to connect the 3 corners of the square. Start joining the squares while you are crocheting the 6th round:

Round 6 (white): connect the yarn to any ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-1, sc in the right ch-2 space of the upper finished square, 3 dc in the same ch-2 space of the unfinished square, sc in next ch-1 space of the upper finished square, (3 dc in the next ch-1 space of the unfinished square, sc in next ch-1 space of the upper finished square) rep three times,

3 dc in next ch-2 space of the unfinished square, sc in next ch-2 space of the upper finished square and sc in next ch-2 space of the left finished square, ch-1,

3 dc in the same ch-2 space of the unfinished square, sc in next ch-1 space of the left finished square, (3 dc in the next ch-1 space of the unfinished square, sc in next ch-1 space of the left finished square) rep three times,

3 dc in next ch-2 space of the unfinished square, sc in next ch-2 space of the left finished square, ch-1, 3 dc in the same ch-2 space of the unfinished square, finish the 6th round of the square pattern

Connect all the squares in the same way

SHOULDERS STRAPS

Mark the places for shoulder straps. I marked 3 spaces on the front and the back parts of the top.

Row 1: connect the yarn to the 1st space of the front part, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-1, 3 dc in next ch space, ch-1, 3 dc in next space

Row 2: ch-4, turn, 3 dc in next space, ch-1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1, dc in the last dc

Row 3: ch-3, turn, 2 dc in the 1st ch-1 space, ch-1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1 3 dc in the last ch space

Repeat Rows 2-3 until you reach the desired length, I crocheted 25 rows. Sew the shoulder strap to the back marked part

ARMHOLES, NECKLINE

Round 1: connect the yarn to any space between 2 squares, ch-3, 2 dc in the same space, ch-1, * 3 dc in next space, ch-1 ** rep from * to **  around, join with sl st to top of ch-3

Round 2: sl st in next 2 dc, sl st in next ch-1 space, ch-1, sc in the same space, 5 dc in next ch-1 space, * sc in next ch-1 space, 5 dc in next ch-1 space **  rep from * to **  around, join with sl st to the 1st sc

or make 2 rows of sc around the armholes and the neckline

BOTTOM:

The number of sc is a multiple of 16

Round 1: connect the yarn to any space between 2 squares, ch-1, sc in the same space, sc in each dc and chain spaces around, join with sl st to the 1st sc (multiple of 16)

Round 2: ch-1, sc in the same place, ch-5, * skip next 3 sc, sc in next sc, ch-5 **, rep from * to ** to the end of the round, join with sl st to the 1st sc (the number of ch-5 is multiply of 4)

Round 3: ch-1, sl st in next ch-5 space, ch-1, sc in the same space, 8 dc in next ch-5 space, * (ch-5, sc in next ch-5 space) rep once, 8 dc in next ch-5 space **, rep from * to ** to the last 3 ch-5 spaces, ch-5, sc in next ch-5 space, ch-2, dc in the 1st sc

Round 4: ch-1, sc in the same space, dc in next dc, (ch-1, dc in next dc) rep 6 times, * sc in next ch-5 space, ch-5, sc in next ch-5 space, dc in next dc, (ch-1, dc in next dc) rep 6 times **, rep from * to ** to the last 2 ch-5 spaces, sc in next ch-5 space, ch-2, dc in the 1st sc

Round 5: ch-1, sc in the same space, * bobble st in next ch-1 space, (picot, ch-2, bobble st in next ch-1 space) rep 5 times, sc in next ch-5 space **, rep from * to ** to the end of the round, join with sl st to the 1st sc
