Crochet Infinity Scarf And Crochet Beanie Free Pattern

infinity scarf and a beanie free pattern

I’ve crocheted this infinity scarf and beanie using a pattern that makes them a very stretchy. The size of the scarf is about 90 cm circumference and 15 cm wide. The size of the hat is about 46 cm circumference and 24 cm wide. This warm winter set is quick to make. You can easily create it if you know how to work in the round and make basic stitches + you will learn how to make a pompom.

Materials:

Yarn: Kartopu 100% Acrylic Gonca (100 grams/ 300 meters), Aran / 10 ply (8 wpi) – 2

How do I make a puff st for this pattern? I’ve made puff st before but there are varying ways to do them and I don’t see the instructions here for your hat and scarf.
    Thanks!

    • Jane says:

      Hi Susan
      Thank you for you question.
      Puff stitch:
Step 1: Yarn over. Insert the hook into the stitch. Pull the yarn through the stitch. Bring the loop up to match the same height as the previous stitch. There should now be 3 loops on your hook.
Step 2: Yarn over. Insert the hook into the same stitch. Pull the yarn through the stitch.Bring the loop up to match the same height as the previous loop. There should now be 5 loops on your hook.
Step 3: Yarn over. Insert the hook into the same stitch. Pull the yarn through the stitch.Bring the loop up to match the same height as the previous loop. There should now be 7 loops on your hook.
Step 4:Yarn over. Pull the yarn through all 7 loops on your hook.
      Good luck!

What is the weight of this yarn. I’m trying to find a suitable substitute I can’t find Kartopu in my area. Is it a medium weight (4) like Red Heart Super Saver, or lighter?

    • Jane says:

I’ve never used Red Heart Super Saver. I can’t find it in my area :) The pattern will usually specify the type of yarn and hook size to use.(100 grams/300 meters, crochet Hook: 4 mm).If you can’t find the yarn, just can use the similar yarn (search for the yarn according to specified parameters)

I am making this hat at the moment. I am loving this pattern. Thank you for letting us have this pattern for free. Is there some way I can email you a photo of the finished product on my daughter’s head?

  6. Kara Beth says:

Hi! I am wondering what weight category this yarn is? Is it a worsted weight? Dk weight? I can’t tell from what is written. Thank you so much!!!

    • Kristi says:

Kara Beth, in the pattern, it is listed as aran weight. But in the US that means something different (slightly thicker than worsted) than elsewhere.

But she’s listed the weight and length: 300 meters for 100 grams, which is most certainly not an aran weight in the US. That’s thinner than a worsted weight. It’s a dk weight (ravelry info confirms that it is a dk weight) and possibly a thin dk at that.

Depending on the density of this yarn vs what you use (which makes the conversion imprecise), look for a dk weight yarn with approx 300 meters per 100 grams.

I love this hat and I’m attempting to make it as I type…..I just have a question…should I be joining each round to the previous round or am I to just keep right on going over the previous row of stitches? This is throwing me off because I am not sure where to join and going from round 7 to round 8 isn’t quite working out for me.

  8. Veerle says:

Lovely beany! I have a question about the amount of stitches: in round 7 you write “3 dc in the next 3 stitches”. That means that after round 7 you have about 130 stitches. Is that correct? I tried this but then round 8 doesn’t make any sense…?

    • Jane says:

Round 7: ch-2, 1 dc in next 3 sts, ch-1, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, ch-1, skip 2 sts, * 1 dc in next 3 sts, ch-1, 1 dc in next 3 sts, ch-1, skip 2 sts, sc in next st, ch-1, repeat from * around.

        I have a question about round 7

        7. Ch2, dc in 3, ch 1, sk 2, sc in next st, ch 1 sk 2 * dc in 3, ch 1, dc in 3, ch 1, sk 2, sc, ch 1 * repeat….. is there supposed to be a sk 2 before the repeat to dc in 3? Or just in the very first set up?

  9. Veerle says:

I think I am doing something very wrong with the beanie, the stitches do not add up… Are the * in row 7 and further in the correct place? It’s not symmetrical this way. Is this correct please? Help….

  10. Christine says:

I just finished this for a customer. Your photo is a bit deceiving. It makes the hat look like a slouchy beanie. Then we realized the model only has the hat on the back of her head. It’s a great hat and pattern otherwise. I just have to undo part of mine now to make it longer.

  11. Vanessa says:

hi i’m doing your scarf right now and i got a question about round 19-20.
when you said bpdc in next fpdc — do you mean i have to do the bpdc the fpdc found in round 17?

follow up question, if this is so, then what happens to round 20? do i have to do the same pattern using round 17 as well?

  12. Deidre says:

I am a beginner and am trying to make this hat. Starting round 9 but do not know how to make a PUFF st. Can you help me please??

    • Jane says:

      Hi Deidre

Puff stitch: Step 1: Yarn over. Good luck!

  13. Aubrey says:

I’m trying the hat now and am wondering if I can chain less to start off with because 84ch is to big around for my head.. Could I just knock off 10 or so chains so it will be smaller? If I do, what would I need to do to the rest of the pattern for it to work with the lesser number of stitches? Please help!

  14. Daniela says:

Hi Jane, thanks for the free pattern!

I have a question though: should I turn the work after joining each round and doing the ch2? I have seen patterns worked in the round with and without turning and I’m confused. Thanks in advance!

  15. Sally says:

Hi, My question is after round 2 (between round 2 and 6) do i chain 2? My other query is it seems that at the end on each round and the beginning of the next it will be a fpdc, Is this correct? or have i done something wrong.

  16. Sally says:

Hello I was wondering after i chain the 84 and then DC in the 4 chain from the hook and every chain there after, do i Count the 1st three chains as a DC, cause if i do i end up with 82 DC and not 81. I hope this query makes sense.

  17. Heather says:

In round 8 it says to ch-2 and then pfdc in the next 3 DC, CH and then 1fpdc in the next 3 fpdc… Does that mean I’m skipping over the sc spots and don’t do anything with those from round 7?

  18. Rachel says:

i am also finding my row 7 to be off. I’ve counted and re-counted the number of stitches I have in row 6 to make sure that I still had 81. Yes I do. I have torn out row 7 twice now, following the pattern and double checking as I go and as someone previously stated, it is not symmetrical. The last 7 stitches in my row are 3dc, ch, 3dc and one empty stitch before I join. If I join, there are 9dc in a row. I just ripped it all out again and tried again, but where it says ch1, sk 2 stitches I only skipped one stitch and it worked out perfectly.

  19. Nicole says:

Hey, I was wondering if you would mind me selling finished toques using your pattern on my etsy shop, I could link to your pattern if you want. Let me know either way, I love this pattern so much, it’s my new favourite pattern. Thanks

  20. Heather says:

Rachel, did the whole hat work perfect by skipping 1 instead of 2? I’m starting rnd 10. After the join it says 6 fpdc, but I only have 3 before I hit the puff St. I’m sure I don’t fpdc oflver the puff St.

  21. Tanja says:

Hello everyone, I am totally in love with the hat.
What I have crocheted so far looks really good, but I am still ab it confused.
Normally when I finish a round I finish the row with a sling stitch. It isn’t mentioned here? So do I just crochet on?

And another question in round 2-6 the ch-2 counts as a dc, is the same true for all the other rounds?

    Thank you!

  22. Diane says:

I was wondering if the cowl is going to get smaller mine seems really long and looking at your picture it seems smaller.

  23. Uyvonne says:

Hello. I just made this hat and I didnt have any problems with the pattern. The only chsnges I had to make was going up a size in my hook and at the bottom of the brim. The brim looked a little too wide to me so what I did was is that I turned the hat upside down inserted my hook ch2 and did another round of dcfp dcbp around with a smaller hook and it turned out nice. Thank you so much it was so easy now im going to scarf.
