There are a lot of tutorials and instructions on how to crochet granny squares on the Internet. But in this tutorial I will show you how you can crochet a beautiful top using this simple pattern. So, let’s begin!
For this project you’ll need some cotton, acrylic or mixed yarn (around 100 grams). It is a great project for using up leftover yarn.
Size: model is wearing size S, but you can easily adapt the top to your size, just make more rows
Crochet Hook: 3,5 mm (E)
Instructions
Make a magic ring.
Round 1: ch-2 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in the ring, ch-2, * 3 dc in the ring, ch-2 **, repeat from * to ** 2 times, join witch sl st to top of ch-2
Round 2: sl st in the first 2 dc’s and in the first ch-2 space, ch-2, 2 dc in ch-2 space, ch- 2, 3 dc in same space, * ch-1, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in same space **, repeat from * to ** 3 times, ch-1, join with slst to top of ch-2.
Round 3: sl st in the first 2 dc’s and in the first ch-2 space, ch-3, 2 dc in same space, ch-2, 3 dc in same space, ch-1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1, * 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch-2, 3 dc in same space ch-1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch-1 **, join with sl st to top of ch-2.
Repeat round 3 as many times as you need but work * ch-1, 3 dc, ch-1 * in each ch-1 space.
Sides
Decrease the side width until you reach 6 dc’s with ch-1 between. Than work 1 dc in each dc and ch-1 space (7 dc). Make as many rows as you need. Ties = 7 dc X 27 rows
The neck
Decrease the neck width as you have decreased the sides. Ties = 3 dc X 28 rows
Then make a row of shell stitches (repeat * 5 dc in next ch-1 space, sc in next ch-1 space *) around the top. Don’t make the shell stitch around ties.
These tops below inspired me to make this project :)

Hi! love the top thank you, doing good so far, but I’m confused how to decrease on the sides and top?
Just don’t work 3 dc into the 1st and the last ch space
Please can you tell me the measurements for the square ?
around 10×10 in or 25×25 cm
I love this top, but I’m a bit confused about the sides. Are you cutting the yarn at the end of each decrease row or are you turning your work somehow? Thank you!
Thank you :) No, I didn’t cut the yarn at the end of each row. You should crochet ch-1 at the end of the row, turn the work, 1 sl st in the first 3 dc to the 1st space, crochet 3 dc in this space and in each space to the end of the row, after that ch-1,turn, and again sl sl in next 3 dc… Hope it will help :)
I find to create more hidden joins on granny squares it’s better to start with a ch3 in the ch1sp, Ch1, 3dc, in each chain space around, 2dc in the starting ch1, sl into the 2nd ch of starting ch2
